In the spirit of making an SKU-related post: I remembered writing this fic for bell some time ago, and found that when all was said and done, I still liked said fic a lot! Which almost never happens, so I decided to share it. Warnings for...metaphysical strangeness ahead?

I seriously never thought this would happen

Yay for lightweight meta? [personal profile] cyanwitch assigned me three tropes (Absurdly Powerful Student Council, Color Coded For Your Convenience, Moral Event Horizon) to blather on about from the meme I posted yesterday, so you'll find more thoughts about them underneath the cut. The first two tropes she gave me were from Utena, and the last one was from Gankutsuou.

Since I'm procrastinating on a paper I'm supposed to be writing at the moment, I figured I'd pull up a meme for now.

So! Name a fandom and I will tell you:

Honorable mention(s):
Crack pairing(s):
Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't:

If I can't think of anything or this isn't applicable to the fandom you've listed, I will probably: 1) plead with you for forgiveness and mercy, and then 2) ask you to pick another fandom instead.

Um, so. I'm back! And with a ton of things to say about my trip and not the first clue on what to start talking about first! Like I said in a couple of the emails I sent out before, I'm happy, contented, and a little sad to be back in the U.S. again. Those two weeks flew by like they were nothing, and all the journal entries to type up and pictures to upload and sheer amount of things I want to talk about are slightly overwhelming. But I really did have a fantastic time; I can't think of a better way to have spent those fourteen days in Osaka and Kyoto and Hiroshima and Kobe and Yokohama and Tokyo.

I think I've recovered from jet-lag now -- my sleep schedule is still kind of disordered and funky, but I'm not sleeping till ridiculous hours in the afternoon anymore. Still, it does feel strange to be in back in a different country in the space of forty-eight hours. So in lieu of actually typing up all my thoughts and feelings on my stay in Japan at the moment, I'm going to post a meme! Which is also a first for this journal.

The Unpopular Fandom Opinion Meme

Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.

And for once, not about the trip!

I've been listening to a bunch of old Disney music over the past few days. I forgot how catchy and earwormy most of it is! Some time ago, there was a "top ten Disney songs" meme going around on LJ, but I doubt I could fill something like that out, because my favorites would sort of read like "all of Aladdin Beauty & the Beast The Lion King The Little Mermaid Mary Poppins and some from Hercules The Hunchback of Notre Dame along with a few others" and that's about it. In other words, lots of Alan Menken.

Anyway, is it just me, or does that one line in Be Our Guest ("life is so unnerving for a servant who's not serving, he's not whole without a soul to wait upon") sound uncomfortably classist? I think that Beauty & the Beast is one of Disney's best, most sweeping overall soundtracks, but even if they play off that verse as part of a theme, it sticks out like a sore thumb. You could argue that it's used to evoke class conditions of the actual time period back then, but even that idea doesn't have much credit, since Belle is one huge walking anachronism anyway. Despite the fact that she's always been my favorite Disney heroine.

It is possible that I am giving this line undue scrutiny!

Besides that, someone needs to make a campy Hikago vid set to Mulan's I'll Make a Man Out of You. If I had the raw episodes and my laptop in decent shape, I'd do it myself. That's right -- every single other Shounen Jump fan can take their ninja, pirates, shinigami, and psychopathic killers. Go players are more hardcore than them all.

Another vid I've been thinking of is an SKU one set to Coin-Operated Boy by the Dresden Dolls, for the Black Rose arc. This is one where I, uh, pretty much have the whole thing conceptualized out in my head. I don't think it's an idea that anyone else has thought of before, and the lyrics match the clips and concept I have for this video uncannily well. I really, really want to find the time to pull this one off.

In yet another tangent, I heard that Ikuhara was storyboarding the opening credits to the anime Aoi Hana, so I decided to check it out. And -- um, wow, repetition of motifs much? Falling flower petals? Check. Clasped hands that are gradually pulled apart from one another? Check. Entwined fingers as the last shot at the very end? Check, check, and check. Even the dancing looks incredibly reminiscent of the movie. Since SKU is his baby, I get the feeling that Ikuhara's never going to truly be involved with another anime in the future. I don't mind that too much, because the series is near and dear to my heart, but it would be nice to see something original from him again.
