Welcome to another edition of the Unofficial Fruits Basket Reread! Before you start reading, grab a snack, sit down, and relax. ♥

For those who aren't familiar with this project, [personal profile] bell and I are rereading the Furuba manga with clearer eyes -- writing down our impressions as we go through each volume again and scrutinize its content, talking about new things we may have noticed this time around. We alternate posts between each volume, and reply back to keep the discussion going. If anyone has any thoughts they'd like to add, feel free to weigh in at any time!

In this post, I'll be talking about volume eight. However, do beware of spoilers for the whole series below the cut.

Life has been a whirlwind of work and sleep (and not much else) at the moment, which means that I've been sorely remiss on updating often.

But in news that has absolutely nothing to do with anything else I'm doing, I picked up the Fruits Basket fanbook last week! And it is verily awesome indeed. Fanbooks in general tend to be most enjoyable if you're hung up on details (like knowing exactly where someone's foot was positioned in one panel during volume two), but the Furuba fanbook is a treasure trove of delights for people who really love the background world and characters. Like me, for example.

Best of all, there are omake in the back. OMAKE. I don't know if they've been scanlated on the net or not, but I decided to type up some of them and share them here. Like I told Ari, I kept all of the exclamation marks to preserve the original...uh, flavor.

The best one, however, was Kyou's reaction upon reading the events of volume 17, although the humor doesn't translate well in pure text form.

Okay! A long, long time ago, [personal profile] bell and I decided to reread Fruits Basket together. However, because of time constraints and delays, we've been going at a fairly slow pace. But since I wanted to resume our project again, I've been typing out this post as fast as I can.

For a start, this is volume six. It's memorable for me, because this is 1) the first volume I ever bought, and 2) the point I mark for when the Serious Business truly begins. These are definitely the darkest chapters I've reread, and from this point on, it only continues to grow darker. It still does a great job of balancing angst with light-hearted humor (contrast the main chapters with Kyou's past -- this really is his volume -- to the last couple of chapters where Yuki visits Ayame's store), but the shift is getting clearer.

Also, my apology in advance: I don't have my copy of the manga with me, so I'm relying on scanlations for this volume. PLEASE DON'T KILL ME.

I'm also going to try a new format for my soapbox ranting this time.
